E-filing ensures your tax data is entered accurately into the IRS
computers. Paper
extensions must be keypunched into the IRS computers by hand.
It
provides proof that you’ve filed.
The IRS sends you a confirmation that they’ve received and accepted
your extension. (Even if you pay for certified mail, it proves only that
an envelope was sent to the IRS. In
the event of a mix-up, the burden is still on you to prove the envelope
contained a valid paper extension.)
You may want to file your extension on paper if:
TaxCut determines that your extension doesn't qualify for e-filing and you cannot correct the errors.
You don't want to wait to receive the status of your extension before completing and filing your actual return.
You transmitted your extension and it was rejected by the IRS.
