Ever thought of making this a Kickstarter project?
I don't know, how many people are still interested in this and if there are enough that would support the project, but maybe ist would e enough to pay some skilled devs?
YES. Kickstarter.
Whilst I agree that kickstarter would be a good way to raise funding for it, there are a number of issues that would prevent it being viable at least for me.
For example, I have a full time job that is worth more to me than the project - I couldn't manage it full time and do my job as well and I am not prepared to give up my living for it because of its short shelf-life.
Secondly is the legality of it all, there would need to be a large amount of money allocated to lawyers in order to ensure that everything was clean and safe for the people involved. (I am not entirely clear on the legality of reverse engineering and decompilation for example and any potential copyright issues created by building a bootloader to emulate iBoot)
Thirdly, licencing - a lot of the stuff we use/wrote is GPL licenced, I am not sure of the implications of this if we were to raise funding to do it.
Forth, The unpredictability of the project as a whole is a big issue. It is simply impossible to estimate the time reverse engineering components takes - when people are being paid, this becomes a significant issue.
Fifth, People will want ports for newer devices than the ones we are targetting presently, and I am just not sure if there are enough suitable exploits to make it happen on those devices.
It's a shame it never worked out and I can very much sympathise with all the issues and never ending hard work that must have gone into it.
Fortunately, Android is supported by a lot of well funded companies, is sufficiently "open" for most people, and is going from strength to strength in the hardware department.
In many ways, buying full price hardware from Apple just to wipe iOS and load Android is only empowering their nasty closedness even more.
If you have an iPhone and wish it could run Android. Sell it to a freedom hater and buy an Android device. Problem solved.

I really do wish I could help. It sucks, I don't know where to be taught how to reverse engineer. I have a lot of time and dedication, and I am a faster learner. But I don't know where to start learning, if anyone can poke me in the right direct please do!

Maybe some of the more skilled Android developers who work with kernel an source could help. Bricked, faux123, pershoot (he also works on CyanogenMod). I also agree with the guy who yelled out Kickstarter. Even if you aren't going to be able to be committed to it, you can always assemble a team of people who will be able to commit to it, and he money will be their motivation.
I had lost hope in the iDroid project and made the switch to Android (and its the best switch ever, I now own two phones and a tablet). Its been awesome on the dark side but life would be awesome if my old iPad could run Android.

Damm,people though all of yell was serious on making idevices run android, when it got to the end everyone just done with it except for one,basically every hacker on this project should just be working on the ipod touch 2g the main one at the end,when yell have free time to work on it litte by little,and than quit the project for now.when the hacker of this project have alot of time to work on the other new idevice.
reason why to work only the ipod touch 2g is because alot of people will like to see it be supported like the iphone 2g, 3g,and ipod touch 1g running on android 2.3.
To be honest, the 2G iTouch was never a priority for any of us except Kleemajo and given that it is armv6 the likeliness of anyone new bothering to pick it up is pretty low.
Untrue. I still have an iPod Nano (the wrist watch thing) but yes I gave away my iPhone 2G and my 2010 Macbook (last one ever) to my dad. Also working full time in a HOSPITAL is a different line of work than programming.
And to agree with Nick Pack, it is almost impossible to reverse engineer stuff. CyanogenMod exists because devices like the Galaxy S II and S3 have their kernel sources codes and blobs available. Without that, no one would be able to port CM to those devices.
that's not 100% true. I am an android kernel dev (with a iphone and android phone:P) and we maked a kernel without using any sources so it is possible but very hard to do

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, on a dead project, on the blog of someone who at this point is probably no longer really involved...but:
You may have already rejected this solution for reasons I don't know, but if the difficulty of reverse engineering prevented this from working, does the project necessarily have to proceed that way? Reverse engineering a proper driver is of course The Right Way, but alternately, couldn't one make a wrapper for iokit drivers, and then just use the drivers already present on the device without decompilation, a la ndiswrapper? That way at least has documentation at every step of the way, though it may be more complex. Also this might be a way to get more people on the project as a iokit->linux wrapper might be of interest outside the mobile community. I suppose that may not solve the boot issue, but then maybe it would; I'm not sure how you're injecting the kernel and bootloader into memory. Like I said, apologies if this was already considered and rejected; I know only a little of kernel programming, and less about ios architecture and ios/arm devices.
I just installed openiboot with bootlace and accidentally pressed reboot then now i have a Black screen i did a hard reset nothing and tried DFU mode and nothing and plugging it in to the computer and nothing

Sad to see that this project died out. Just seeing this now because I found an old iPod Touch 1st generation lying around, and was frustrated that there were so many apps not compatible with iOS 3 anymore.
Is it still possible to install iDroid and OpeniBoot via Bootlace? Saw on Twitter that CDN is down, so maybe not...
Well, it may not have reached full fruition, but I think it's been a wild success. I was so thrilled to see 1.6 running on my 3G. Thanks a lot for the amazing efforts. I hope it does get picked up. I've got great prerequisite skills to work on something like this, but it's always a function of time. And when I can just go buy an Android device on the side, that unfortunately often happens. Still, if a Kickstarter/Google Summer of Code type project can keep it moving, that'd be extremely awesome!
Just want to chime in and say that since the apple App Store basically is actively dropping support for and even access to apps that will run on iOS 3.1.3, iDroid has breathed new life into my old iPhone 2G so thank you very much for that!

With recent events in mind (iPhone 2g and 3g out of whats app), this solution has become somewhat of a last straw for me to use whats app (hope i get it running...). There are quite a lot of people out there with 3g models still. These people cant use whats app anymore. Maybe some of these people (me included) could convince some of the development team to come back and maybe present a stable and finished low tier version of Android on iPhone. With convince i mean some donations. It seems realisitc that quite a few might be interested to join in. But i guess I am little too late to this party :( You guys have done amazing work and it is a shame that I stumble upon this so late. Is someone still reading the comments here :P?

Hate to see this project die. I would be interested in helping in a while, I'll definitely have more time around Christmas, but right now I can devote about 30 min/day to learning something. If anyone wants to help (assuming they already know most things about using computers and terminal, just not programming), what should we be learning?

A while ago, weren't you guys trying to fund an ARM decompiler? That would make things quite a bit easier would it not? I'm pretty sure you never got it funded, but why not try again? Actually the problem now is more to do with a shortage of people, sure the ARM decompiler would help but with nobody to actually use it, it would be a waste.

Gotta say, I really dig this project man. But, with advent I'd dreamboad, it's not even necessary. I've had a droid eris, and there's 2 dreamboad themes that behave exactly like it. No need for a different OS anymore.
