Form 1040X - Amended U.S. Individual Tax Return

General Information

Use Form 1040X to amend your original Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ. If you prepared your 2007 tax return using our product, we'll fill in most of the form for you automatically.

Form 1040X "is a creature of administrative origin and grace." Although there is no Internal Revenue law which authorizes an amended return, the IRS provides Form 1040X so you can modify or replace your original return. This form is also the primary means for claiming a refund on an amended return.

If you indicate at the top of this form that this is an amended return for calendar year 2007, then proceed as follows:

  1. Load your originally-filed tax return.

  2. Save a copy under a new name (File/Save As).

  3. Make the corrections to this new file.

  4. Go to Form 1040X (this form) in the new file.

  5. Fill in Column A with data from your original return.

  6. We carry amounts to column C from your corrected 2007 Form 1040, and calculate column B.

If you're changing your exemption amount, then you should complete Part I on page 2 of Form 1040X. If you're amending your 2007 Form 1040, and changing your exemption amount, we calculate your corrected exemption amount (but you will have to factor in the phase-out, if any, for 2007).

If you're amending a tax return other than your 2007 tax return you can still use our Form 1040X, but you will need to enter amounts in both columns A and C. We calculate column B regardless of the year being corrected.

We carry data from other forms in this tax return as the amended (corrected) amounts. If this 1040X is not for 2007, you will have to type over the numbers that had been carried in.

Year

We automatically put the year 2007 in the box for the year. If you're amending a return for a different year, you should change the year we entered for you.

Carries

We carry amounts from the form that you indicate near the top of Form 1040X.

Line 6 - Tax Schedule

If the correct amount of your taxable income in line 5C is $100,000 or more, we automatically insert the letters "TRS" in the text at the beginning of line 6. "TRS," which is short for Tax Rate Schedules, indicates that we used the Tax Rate Schedules to figure the amount of your tax.

If the correct amount of your taxable income in line 5C is less than $100,000, we automatically insert the word "TABLE" in the text at the beginning of line 6. "TABLE" indicates that we used the Tax Tables to figure the amount of your tax.

If your tax was computed using the method shown in the Capital Gains Tax Worksheet (see the IRS Instructions for Form 1040 and Form 1040A), we automatically insert the letters "CGTW" to indicate that we used that method to figure the amount of your tax.
