Precautions and Limitations
Connection to a Server
If the media on a server (music, photos, video) changes while a client is connected, VAIO Media may not be able to access the media. To access the new information, point to the left edge of the screen with your mouse, then click Refresh on the menu that appears; or you can restart VAIO Media.
Types of Files that you can Play Back or View
You can play back or view the following types of files.
You cannot play back tracks using copyright protection technology.
Music files
  • OpenMG formatted music files
    Hint
    The following restrictions apply to playing OpenMG formatted music files:
    • Tracks with playback restrictions cannot be played back with VAIO Media unless the necessary conditions are met. (For example, tracks with a limited playback period cannot be played back once the playback period elapses.)
    • Tracks with invalid rights cannot be played back with VAIO Media. (For example, if a track rights is copied from another computer, the track rights are no longer valid and cannot be played back.)
    • Tracks purchased through an electronic music distribution service (EMD service) on the Internet cannot be played, unless the distributor has given permission to share them over a home network.
  • WAV format music files
    Only 16-bit linear PCM WAV files can be played back with VAIO Media.
  • MP3 format music files
    • VAIO Media cannot play back variable bit rate (VBR) MP3 files correctly. When you play back such files, playback may be interrupted, the time display may not be correct, etc.
    • MP3 files with a bit rate of more than 256Kbps may not play correctly.
  • Audio files that can undergo linear PCM conversion on the server
Photos (image files)
You can view any of the following file types with VAIO Media.
  • Bitmap format
  • JPEG format
  • GIF format
  • TIFF format
  • PNG format
Video
You can play back MPEG1 and MPEG2 format files.
Your computer must run a preinstalled version of VAIO MPEG2 decoding software to be able to play back MPEG2 video files.
Operating Environment
The operation of VAIO Media is only guaranteed on standard VAIO computers running Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Supported Network Interfaces
VAIO Media only supports the following network interfaces: Ethernet (100Base-TX/10Base-T) or wireless LAN interface (IEEE 802.11b) built into your computer, or Sony wireless LAN interface (IEEE 802.11a or IEEE 802.11b) cards.
Sending Data
When VAIO Media sends data to the server, some computer-specific information (computer name, etc.) is also sent.
