Computers have become a necessity for students. Some schools or some majors, particularly technology and science, require students to have a computer. The computer may be a one-time only cost, but software, upgrades, repairs, and insurance (particularly for laptops) will add costs annually. Many schools provide online access for students living on campus, but off-campus students will need to pay for an online service.
