The following VAIO Media functions must be operated from a user account with administrator privileges (called variously, "Computer Administrator" or "Administrator," depending on the operating system).
- Device registration
- Windows Firewall configuration
Depending on the type of user account currently logged on, it may be necessary to log on again as a user with administrator privileges in order to use these functions. Actual operations differ as follows, according to the computer's operating system:
When running Windows Vista
If you attempt to use the device registration function while logged on as a standard user, a dialog box appears asking for permission from the Administrator account holder. After entering the Administrator account password in this dialog box and clicking OK, you can access the function even as a standard user. (In other words, even standard users still require the Administrator account password.)
Even when logged on as the Administrator, a dialog box asking for permission to continue appears when you attempt to use the above functions. In this case click the "Continue" button.
Operating differences by function are as follows.

When you change the [Allow other devices to access VAIO Media] check box setting on the "Firewall Settings" screen of the VAIO Media settings screen, and then click OK, a dialog box appears asking for permission from the Administrator account holder. (Thereafter, even if this setting is changed, the dialog box asking for Administrator permission does not appear until VAIO Media is exited.)

 Hint
Even when logged on as a standard user, you can avoid the above restrictions by running VAIO Media "as an administrator." When starting VAIO Media, instead of clicking [VAIO Media] under the VAIO Media program menu registered in the Start menu, right-click it to display the context menu, and then click [Run as administrator].
When running Windows XP
To use any of the above functions, you must log on from a user account with administrator privileges. If you are logged on to a user account with restrictions, log on again to a user account with administrator privileges.
Connection to a Server
- If the media on a server (music, photos, video) changes while a client is connected, VAIO Media may not be able to access the media. To access the new information, display the menu on the left edge of the screen with your mouse, keyboard, or remote control, then select Refresh on the menu; or you can restart VAIO Media.
- The number of clients that can be connected to a server may be restricted by the capacity of your network, as well as the server's CPU.
VAIO Media Integrated Server and Content Collection may not be preinstalled on some VAIO models. In addition, the functions available for VAIO Media Integrated Server and Content Collection differ depending on their versions. For details about how to use these servers, refer to VAIO Media Server Settings Help (or the VAIO media console's Help).
Limitations with Servers other than VAIO Media
When playing media files distributed with a server other than VAIO Media (i.e., devices that can distribute media files playable with VAIO Media), the following functions are not available:
- Sorting media files in a list
- Searching for media files
- Displaying thumbnails of media files
- Displaying or verifying attribute information for media files other than title
- Pausing, fast-forwarding, rewinding, or changing playback position with the slider for the currently playing media file
- Resuming playback of a media file from the point where it was previously stopped
- Displaying reduced photos
Types of Files that you can Play Back or View
You can play back or view the following types of files.
You cannot play back tracks using copyright protection technology.
  Music files
- OpenMG formatted music files
 Hint
The following restrictions apply to playing OpenMG formatted music files:
- Tracks with playback restrictions cannot be played back with VAIO Media unless the necessary conditions are met. (For example, tracks with a limited playback period cannot be played back once the playback period elapses.)
- Tracks with invalid rights cannot be played back with VAIO Media. (For example, if a track rights is copied from another computer, the track rights are no longer valid and cannot be played back.)
- Tracks purchased through an electronic music distribution service (EMD service) on the Internet cannot be played, unless the distributor has given permission to share them over a home network.
- WAV format music files
Only 16-bit linear PCM WAV files can be played back with VAIO Media.
- MP3 format music files
VAIO Media cannot play back variable bit rate (VBR) MP3 files correctly. When you play back such files, the time display may not be correct.
- Audio files that can undergo linear PCM conversion on the server
  Photos (image files)
You can view any of the following file types with VAIO Media.
- Bitmap format
- JPEG format
- GIF format
- TIFF format
- PNG format
  Video
You can play back MPEG1 and MPEG2 format files.
Your computer must run a preinstalled version of VAIO MPEG2 decoding software to be able to play back MPEG2 video files. MPEG2 video files with the following audio formats are supported:
- MPEG1 Layer 2
- Linear PCM
- AC3 (Only VAIO models preinstalled with VAIO Media AC3 Decoder)
Operating Environment
The operation of VAIO Media is only guaranteed on the following computers. Other operating environments are not supported.
- Sony VAIO computers with Windows Vista or Windows XP preinstalled
- Sony VAIO computers upgraded to Windows Vista using the Windows Vista upgrade program
- Sony VAIO computers upgraded to Windows XP using the Windows XP upgrade program
Supported Network Interfaces
VAIO Media only supports the following network interfaces:
- VAIO built-in Ethernet and wireless LAN interface
- Sony wireless LAN interface cards
When playing audio (such as WAV files) distributed as linear PCM data by the server or when playing video, Sony recommends a network interface capable of high-speed transmission, using at least a 100BASE-TX wired LAN or a wireless LAN of type IEEE 802.11a / IEEE 802.11g.
Sending Data
When VAIO Media sends data to the server, some computer-specific information (computer name, etc.) is also sent.
