OpenMG is a trademark of Sony Corporation. Any other systems and products mentioned in this document are trademarks of their respective owners. Note that TM and (R) marks are omitted in this document. Hereafter, OpenMG Secure Module Version 4.7.00 is called OpenMG. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Overview: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OpenMG is a copyright protection technology that is used to manage the digital music content downloaded to the PC from CDs, the Internet and/or other sources. Software installed on the PC records music content in encrypted form onto the hard disk. In addition to enjoying music on the PC, this technology protects against unauthorized distribution on the Internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scope of Support and System Requirements: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Support for the operating environment depends on OpenMG and each application developed with OpenMG. Before referring to the system requirements and operating environment mentioned below, please check what support is covered in your application. Future upgrades of OpenMG may cause applications to change the scope of their support. To know what support is available for an upgraded OpenMG, please check this document as necessary. To use OpenMG, you need: * IBM PC/AT compatible machine in which one of the following OSs is preinstalled. (An environment in which two or more OSs are installed is not supported) - Microsoft Windows Vista Business - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate - Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 - Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 - Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition - Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition - Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 3 or later) - Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition - Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition * CPU Intel Pentium III 800 MHz or higher processor clock speed (OS : Windows Vista) Intel Pentium III 450 MHz or higher processor clock speed (OS : Windows XP/2000/Millennium Edition/98 Second Edition) - Intel Pentium III 1 GHz or higher processor clock speed is required for a time-shift playback (playback during CD recording) of a content file which is compressed with ATRAC Advanced Lossless codec. * RAM 512 MB of RAM or higher recommended (OS : Windows Vista) 128 MB of RAM or higher recommended (OS : Windows XP/2000/Millennium Edition/98 Second Edition) * Soundboard * 20 MB of available hard-disk space or higher on a system drive (usually C: drive) * Microsoft DirectX Runtime 8.0 or later version * Microsoft Windows Media Format Runtime 9 or later version * Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later version * CD-ROM drive or USB port (or other appropriate interfaces) for importing music data For additional information, please see the notes below. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About Operating Environment: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * General The setting for Internet Explorer is used for connection to the Internet. Please make sure you can go online to the Internet through Internet Explorer. * Windows 2000 Professional / Windows XP Professional - To install OpenMG, you must be a member of the Administrators group. - To operate OpenMG, you must be a member of the Administrators or Power User group. Users and Guests groups are not allowed to operate OpenMG. - If the file system is NTFS, appropriate access permissions should be granted to the folder where the programs and content files are stored. Basically, default access permissions will be fine, but the setting for storing content in a specific directory that any other person cannot access (such as My Documents) might cause errors to your application. How to set NTFS access permissions on each system is not supported. Also, operations on NTFS systems are not supported by most applications. Please check what support is available in your application. * Access to Devices Connected with Computers Here are some notes for the use of CD-ROM devices or portable audio devices connected with computers: - Do not use several software applications for the same device at the same time. When you record music using the CD-ROM device, running other software applications that access the CD-ROM drive (such as CD player application, CD-R/CD-RW management application, or other type of application that monitors the operation of a CD-ROM device) might cause noises or errors in recording. - Do not change the device configuration while you are using the devices. When you use the CD-ROM device or portable audio device that is connected with the computer via USB/i-Link, adding or removing another USB/i-Link device (such as a USB mouse) might internally disconnect the device even if it is physically connected and might cause content loss during the data transmission. - An error might occur if you put your computer into Standby or Hibernation mode while the device is used. * Cautions about CD-ROM Devices - Use a CD-ROM device that officially supports digital importing of music CD data. OpenMG is designed to support a wide range of CD-ROM devices, but some CD-ROM devices do not officially support digital importing of music CD data. In such devices, CD data is incorrectly imported (e.g., data reading is reversed left to right), which makes OpenMG unable to correct the data or to provide high performance. - Note that the speed of CD-ROM devices specified in product catalogs usually refers to the CD-ROM data reading. The speed of the music CD data reading is mostly lower than that. - Keep the CD disks clean when recording. Dust or scratches on the CD disks may cause noises, especially in high-speed importing of digital music data. - When you import music CD data, exit any other utility applications for the CD-ROM or CD-R drive. Other applications accessing the CD-ROM device may cause noises in recording. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About Music Content: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * General To perform copyright protection, OpenMG relies on the music content file data itself, not on filenames or pathnames. (Filenames and pathnames are provided for applications to use.) Because of this mechanism, OpenMG regards some different files as the same and uses the same usage rights for them. For example, when music content is purchased from an on-line music distribution service, it will be stored in the common path so that many applications can access it. If this content is copied to a different directory or converted into a different format to make another music file, OpenMG regards these files are identical and uses the same usage rights for both files as a unit. * OMG files OMG files can be used only within the same PC. Other PCs cannot use them. * MP3 files Use MP3 files encoded with Constant Bit Rate. MP3 files encoded in Variable Bit Rate are not supported. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About Portable Audio Devices: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * General For information and support for your portable audio device, please refer to the manual for that device or see the Web site of the device's manufacturer. * Notes for Memory Stick-equipped products - Please make sure to empty your Memory Stick before formatting. Generally, if you format the Memory Stick to delete music content checked out on it, OpenMG deals with this as if the check-in operation were performed, and restores the usage rights for this content (the number of times the content can be checked out) . If you delete movable content, however, you might lose its usage rights forever. It is recommended you empty the Memory Stick before formatting it. * Notes for Net MDs - Unlike Memory Stick-equipped products, Net MDs do not support restoring usage rights if content checked out on Minidisc is deleted. - OMG files encoded with ATRAC3 132/105/66kbps are compatible with the LP2/LP2/LP4 modes respectively, which makes it possible to perform high-speed check-in and check-out operations without additional conversion. To play back music content on a device that is not compatible with MDLP modes, you can convert the content to ATRAC to maintain compatibility to perform check-in and check-out operations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Backup of Content: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * General One OpenMG can be installed on one PC. All content usage rights managed by OpenMG will be backed up and restored as a unit. To restore content usage rights, connection to the Internet is required for authentication. * Multiple applications sharing OpenMG In contrast to content usage rights that are managed and backed up as a unit by OpenMG, content files are managed by each application. If several applications perform backup and restoration at different times, it might cause conflicts between usage rights. Therefore, if you are using more than one OpenMG-compatible application on your system, you must do the backup operation with extreme caution. The simplest solution is to successively perform a backup operation for each application and successively restore each data. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About Copyrights and Trademarks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 1999,2000,2001,2002,2003,2004,2005 Sony Corporation (c)1999 Microsoft Corporation.
