bzip2

bzip2 is a freely available, patent free (see below), high-quality data
compressor. It typically compresses files to within 10% to 15% of the best
available techniques (the PPM family of statistical compressors), whilst being
around twice as fast at compression and six times faster at decompression.

Build instructions:
  unpack bzip2-1.0.6-X-src.tar.bz2
    if you use setup to install this src package, it will be
	 unpacked under /usr/src automatically
  cd /usr/src
  cygport ./bzip2-1.0.6-X.cygport all

This will create:
  /usr/src/bzip2-1.0.6-X.tar.bz2
  /usr/src/bzip2-1.0.6-X-src.tar.bz2
  /usr/src/libbz2_1-1.0.6-X.tar.bz2
  /usr/src/libbz2-devel-1.0.6-X.tar.bz2

Also, 'cygport ./bzip2-1.0.6-X.cygport check' will test the package

To link this library with your projects:
  #1) include bzlib.h
  #2) to link with the static library, use '-static' on the link line 
  #3) to link with the dll compile and link as usual; no special flags
      or -Ddefines are necessary

and how bzip2-stat.exe is built (with the static lib).

  Converted to 'auto-import' build, and renamed the DLL.  The old
  DLL is 'cygbz21.0.dll' and is in the libbz2_0 package.  The new
  DLL is 'cygbz2-1.dll' and is in the libbz2_1 package.  New 
  programs built with -lbz2 will get the new dll, but old programs
  that depend on the old DLL will continue to work -- and both
  libbz2_0 and libbz2_1 can be installed at the same time.

  Split binary package into two: libbz2_0-VER-REL and bzip2-VER-REL.
  This way, when the package is converted over to auto-import 
  behavior and the DLL is renamed, the two DLLs can coexist.

As of 1.0.1-3, the dll is named "cygbz21.0.dll" NOT "libbz2.dll".  This 
  helps to avoid dll naming conflicts between cygwin dll's and 
  dlls from other platforms (native, pw, etc).  If you have an
  executable that depends on "libbz2.dll" you may either recompile 
  your app so that it links with libbz2.dll.a/cygbz21.0.dll, or install
  *just* the dll from bzip-1.0.1-2.tar.gz into your /usr/bin 
  directory.

The executables installed are the *statically* linked versions, 
regardless of the name (e.g. bzip2-stat.exe is installed as 
<prefix>/bin/bzip2.exe).
