Sample Pack Contest VI - Scoring Template Your name/pseudonym: dust hill resident - Give scores for ALL the songs except for your own (if you have any.) - Scores are out of 100, where 100 = faultless/perfect, and 0 = totally void of merit/worst song ever. - Do not use fractions. - Commenting on songs is optional. - E-mail as an attachment to daveharris.lunar@gmail.com Some aspects to consider when scoring: - Sound design: ingenuity with and manipulation of the source samples, modification of samples to create new sounds, etc. - Composition: structure, melody, harmony, rhythm, basically how well written you think the song itself is, etc. - Production: mixing/mastering (balance between instruments, overall loudness if it's a factor), stereo field use, frequency spectrum use (good use of EQ), use of effects, etc. - Overall enjoyment: simply how much you like the song. - Anything else you deem important. consider these elements on a case by case basis, as some may be more or less applicable depending on the song. how much you factor each into your scoring is up to you - if you wish, you may set aside a certain number of points for each element if it makes the judging process easier for you, however the total scores are the only thing that will be relevant in score calculations. ________ SCORES: -------------------------------------- 1999 or 2012: 57 A Song for My Cat: 85 Akira Yamaoka vs Ken Ishii: 70 Alleyway in Chinatown: 83 Aqua Aura Pura: 87 Aya Hirano's Megaton Punch: 94 Bad Tekno: 77 Candy Rock Jam: 88 Cloudtrip: 82 Corruption of the Tune: 55 Cyberdemon Boogie: 70 DanielDellaCocco: Deep Throat Tengoku: 92 Doctor Mars: 83 Everybody Wants Overcalculated 75 Extra Antler Velvet: 78 Gateway to Happiness: 71 Go Go Power!: 34 Green Grass: 80 How to Open a Can of SPC: 62 I sneak up and hitcha in the cr 85 King of the Crypt: 61 Legend of Sample Pack Compo: 62 Martian Lab at Midnight: 95 Medium Zero: 71 Mr. Huffletuff's Kitty Cat Cos 78 No Bananas for Deborah: 76 Nobody Wants Overcalculated 83 Omnious Abbey: 72 Our Heliocentric Garden: 88 PRUNEAU: 72 Riding the Duckdragon: 86 Seven Proxies: 98 Slick Venus: 77 Spaz Premium: 78 Tarot Pharoah: 81 Ten-Chan Looks Like Joey Wheele 78 Tertiary Jump: 83 The Incredible Cat Mincer: 99 Tidal Chamber: 90 Trop Glop Flop: 77 TV Surfer: 73 U.B. Really nice overall feel and soundscape once the song properly starts. This does a few cool things with the samples, and makes use of some of the more weird samples. Due to its long length, it would work great in a video game... a boss fight or something. As music for listening, it would probably be alright for listening to during a really long car ride. Guess: Kungfufurby ________ A Song for My Cat Comments: Intelligent Dance Music. Really nice atmosphere, really cool use of samples, both melodic and percussive. Really impressive stuff. I enjoyed this a lot. ________ Akira Yamaoka vs Ken Ishii Comments: Good overall feel, nice soundscape. Cool use of samples. Pretty trippy stuff. In some ways, it reminds me of the kind of stuff you might find on a weird pirate FM radio station at 3 in the morning... at least some of it. ________ Alleyway in Chinatown Comments: I love it. Real smooth jammin' and wonderful soundscape. That guitar chord thing was hard to use, you found a good use for it. This is a chillout track. I love the lead jammin'. ________ Aqua Aura Pura Comments: Ah man yeeeeahhhhhhhh PENIS PENIS PENIS. Good soundscape. The sounds really add to the atmosphere. Interesting sound there in the beginning. Great chords. Wow, I love the part that starts around 1:41. I'm not really very taken with the soloist jammin' around 2:09 - I'll admit that it's not my thing, but also I'm not sure if it fits with the rest of the song. This song has a good atmosphere throughout. guess: Blitz Lunar ________ Aya Hirano's Megaton Punch Comments: Hahah, what on earth. Oh wow. Incredible. I love it. This is a certain kind of heavy dance beatmix that I don't know the name of. A mix of happy cute stuff with heavy beats and crazy sampling. It's not only funny, but catchy, and there are some parts with amazing atmosphere to them. Amazing composition, amazing sample use, amazing soundscape, amazing workmanship overall. guess: MaliceX (not sure) ________ Bad Tekno Comments: Aaauh! Aaauh! Funny melody. I love how the whip sound accompanies the kick, and how the AAAH accompanies the snare. Pretty funny stuff. This is a fun little song. Hah hah, excellent ending. And that ending isn't just funnny, it sounds good too. I really like the guitar strumming effect there. I wish that was longer. That sound at 52 seconds reminds me of the title screen music from Fate/Stay Night. guess: ant1. Dunno though. ________ Candy Rock Jam Comments: Rockman PENIS NETWORK. That intro is a bit too quiet. Hah hah... yeeeea man, good soundscape and sample/sound use. Love the chords. This is cool stuff. Hah, what's this at 1:36? Things have changed quite a lot, quite suddenly (but in a good way). REALLY like the melody and chord progression here. Smooth stuff, with a great feeling. Technical masterpiece. I feel slightly let down by the fadeout ending, but anyway. Yea man yea PENIS PENIS PENIS. ________ Cloudtrip Comments: Great use of that mel2chord(or whatever it was) sample. I couldn't get that one to work at all. Anyway, I'm not keen on the way the fm bass sample has been used for that arpeggio... not sure why exactly, it doesn't really sound right to me played at such a high pitch. The rest of the sound design seems good to me. You made good use of the orchestral hit things. Impressive composition when you get into it. Very good melody. Well crafted overall. Impressive song length. Hah, nice transpose/chord changes at the end. Overall, I liked it. ________ Corruption of the Tune Comments: There are a few cool things in here. They're a bit spread out, though. I think this is a minute longer than it needs to be. Nice atmosphere at the end. Overall it has its moments, but doesn't really do anything amazing. guess: Kungfufurby. I thought it was him as soon as I saw the filename, and became certain when I started listening. ________ Cyberdemon Boogie Comments: ________ DanielDellaCocco Comments: Sorry about this one. I think it did have potential, but I did a bit of a lazy job. I was in a hurry to get to bed while writing it. It really could have done with a bit more polish (the lead is too loud in the mix) and an extra section, the ending is especially rushed sounding. I'm kicking myself over this one. ________ Deep Throat Tengoku Comments: SONIC YOU SLUT. I like the melody/progression and the feel of the song. The vocal samples are funny. The overall sample usage is very good. Nice bassline. I think this is something I'll find myself listening quite a bit. I laughed at the porn voice at 2:09. You are a real cocker now. Hah hah hah. Great stuff. guess:MaliceX ________ Doctor Mars Comments: This is some really catchy stuff. Very cool. I like your choice of percussive sounds. Great bass. Good sample use. Pleasant ending. The part at 23/24 seconds reminds me of the 'jammin jungle' music from Mega Bomberman. guess: Could it be blitz lunar? It has a bit of a Lunar progression to it. I'm not sure. ________ Everybody Wants Overcalculated Scientist Orgasms Comments: Although I quite like that hissy/noisy sound, it gets a bit grating after awhile. But anyway, seems like you made something useful out of the more difficult sounds in the pack. I really like the stuff you do with the orchestra hit things at around 47 seconds. You do some cool stuff with the singing girl. But yeah, this thing has a memorable soundscape... a good atmosphere. I'm not keen on fadeout endings, but in this case I think there really wasn't a more appropriate way to end the song. This is good. ________ Extra Antler Velvet Comments: I love this rhythm. And also this chord progression. The rhythm is reminding me of some video game music, but I don't know what. This has a really heavy sound going on... it actually sounds clipped. On one hand, that can sound bad, but it actually kind of works here... It makes it sound hardcore heavy, although it is perhaps a little bit too much for my liking. I like the 'singing girl' lead. I also like the lead at 35 or so seconds, really jazzy stuff. Yes, those leads fit well with the rhythm. Hahaha, what an ending. Good work. No, I don't intend to say any more about this now but, I hope that you like my comment. Yeah, good bye with you all. Of listening to this song. Fuck yeah, do it. It's good, you know. Hauuh bastards. ________ Gateway to Happiness Comments: I really like the way this begins. You start things off with a great feeling and atmosphere. I like the sounds that you use, although some of them have some clicking or something in them, which is a shame. Then at 37 seconds, things go a bit weird for a moment, although you manage to keep a good atmosphere. This is chillout stuff... excellent for relaxing. Your sounds are engineered almost perfectly for this kind of relaxed music. It really is a shame about the sound with the clicking in it. As for the length of the song, it's perhaps a bit too long... but chillout music is usually supposed to be quite long. Still, it could have ended after four minutes and I'd have been pleased enough. The later parts of the song aren't quite as relaxing, although they're alright. I like the ending. guess: KungFuFurby ________ Go Go Power! Comments: Nice atmosphere, but too repetitive. Not very inspired sounding. Just seems to be a repeating bassline and drum beat with some transposed chords and occasionally a melodic thing or small variation. The ending isn't really much of an ending either, the song just seems to stop. I expected something like this when I heard that you had submitted so many songs. You should probably just have concentrated on making three or four very good polished songs instead of pumping out as many as possible. guess:KungFuFurby ________ Green Grass Comments: Very cute. I like the chord progression and the melody, they're both very pleasant. Good rhythm too. The sounds fit the song quite well. That powerful bass surpised me when it came in. Yeah... this is very nice stuff. Not much of an ending, but oh well. Still great. ________ How to Open a Can of SPC Comments: Sounds like something got stuck in the CPU cooler fan. Once that noise fades away, things get interesting. This is overall quite relaxing. There are some pleasant things in this, like the atmosphere, the sounds (except for the thing at the beginning. I wouldn't complain about it if it wasn't for the fact that it covers up that rather nice sounding arpeggio), but there are also some strange and not so good things. From 1:09 to 1:22, there's a space of time with nothing but a really simple drum beat. What's the point? You could remove this and nobody'd notice. It just seems like needless padding. And there's that sound with the clicking in it again. The ending is a rather abrupt fadeout. guess: KungFuFurby ________ I sneak up and hitcha in the crotch Comments: You really did. Great name. Nice intro motif. Is that a quacking duck sound? Great feeling and atmosphere - the leads really work, especially with that reverb sound you put on them. It has a really powerful feel. Great sound work, I love the cat chords, the bass sound, the leads, arpeggios, etc. It's a great work. I especially like that sound effect at 1:00/1:01. guess: Blitz Lunar ________ King of the Crypt Comments: ________ Legend of Sample Pack Compo Comments: Really nice atmosphere. It has an aquatic feel to it. But again, it's too long, and there seem to be one or two samples which are not in tune. That's no good. There are some interesting things in this, and overall it's pleasant, but that tuning issue is quite grating. I like the part at 2:30. Yeah... this is actually quite pleasant. Mostly. It repeats far too much though. guess:KungFuFurby ________ Martian Lab at Midnight Comments: Whoa. Stellar sound engineering. Really sounds amazing. I love the sounds you've used and created. But it's not just your sounds - it's the mixing and mastering, use of stereo, everything is just perfect. Top notch. The composition is excellent too. Really good stuff... the composition is also top notch. Love the guitar shredding. This is hardcore heavy stuff. Funny ending, too. Slightly abrupt, but the ending is the hardest part of a song to write. guess: Rocco ________ Medium Zero Comments: Good sound engineering - nice sounds, both percussive and melodic. The song structure is solid, although some parts sound quite similar to other songs that you've written before. Still good though. I'm not the best judge for this kind of music, since it's not really the kind of thing I'd usually listen to. guess: Kris Troutman ________ Mr. Huffletuff's Kitty Cat Cosmic Escapades Comments: I have to be honest. I can appreciate the skills and techniques used to make this, but I don't especially like it. The mewing gets annoying very quickly, I'd probably like it a lot more without. The music itself is competently done, and quite pleasant at times, but it's nothing groundbreaking. You did similiar things in the last two contests, but for some reason it didn't work as well here as it did before. But anyway, overall it's certainly not bad. guess: blue.nocturne ________ No Bananas for Deborah Comments: Nice music with a relaxing feel. I'm not keen on that 'mm bananas' sound being used so much, though. It kind of ruins it for me. Ignoring that, the music is very pleasant relaxing stuff, well produced and composed. guess: the kroc ________ Nobody Wants Overcalculated Scientist Orgasms Comments: Cool chord progression, very cool and distinctive soundscape. I especially like the percussive sounds. I really like the part from 17 to 30 seconds - great chords and feel. The ending is fun - I like how it suddenly gets very excited for a few seconds and then returns back to what it was before. I like this a lot. guess: maxo ________ Omnious Abbey Comments: The intro is mostly cool, but there's a high pitched sound there that hurt my ears a bit. Cool sound effects though. It's a bit long, too, but anyway. Once the song actually starts, it's cool stuff. Cool composition. I'd be interested in knowing how you got that voice 'ooh' sound that plays through the right ear/speaker. It sounds very good. Anyway, the song itself is short but pleasant. ________ Our Heliocentric Garden Comments: Really nice atmospheric music. I'm not especially keen on the cut up 'what, my music is keeping you from falling asleep', but I like everything else. Overall excellent sample use and sound design. ________ PRUNEAU Comments: Nothing much seems to happen in this. There's some pretty cool percussion, but apart from that, it just seems to take a while to start, starts, then does nothing until stopping. I can recognise that there was skill involved in manipulating the samples, but the composition itself is weak. Maybe I just don't understand it or something. ________ Riding the Duckdragon Comments: This is a compelling piece. Very exciting. Excellent progression and melody and overall song structure. The sound engineering ________ Seven Proxies Comments: Really enjoyed this one. Good music, I appreciate the chords, bassline, and melody. This is one where the composition shines. I appreciate that it does stuff out of the ordinary. I also appreciated the sound use, it seems somehow simple but very effective. Although there are a few things that could perhaps be improved - the song seems to start quite quiet, and end quite loud. I understand that this is dynamics and can be a good thing, but I think the difference between the quiet and loud may be too great. I found myself turning up the volume at the start, and turning it down at the end. The hi-hat sound seems to be a rather loud click noise, especially noticable at the beginning. This sound is definitely a too harsh/loud, at least at the beginning of the song. The song itself starts quiet and gets gradually louder, but this sound seems to be at a constant volume. But anyway, overall, definitely a favorite. If it weren't for those small problems, I would give it a full 100. ________ Slick Venus Comments: One of the sound effects at the beginning reminds me of the sound at the 'halken' logo at the beginning of Kirby's Dreamland 3. I suppose the sound effects are cool, but they don't really do much for me and perhaps go on a bit too long. Really nice feel at the beginning, once the music starts. Then on to smooth cheese jamming. Well produced, well written, and etc. Doesn't really amaze me, but I can appreciate the skills and ideas involved. Nice title. guess: smh ________ Spaz Premium Comments: Great breakbeats. I'm really not keen on that hard panning, though. Anyway, cool sounds and sound effects. Catchy beats... hardcore stuff. Good work. I like how it's mostly percussive, and only occasionally features melodic elements. Quite funny and cool in its own way. PENIS PENIS PENIS. ________ Tarot Pharoah Comments: YU GI OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!! It's TIIIIIME to DD D D ... DDDDDDUEL Cool atmospheric stuff. I quite like this. Good sound engineering, good composition - it successfully sets that 'egyptian'/spooky feel, which is very well done. It's not something I'd listen to usually myself, but I can appreciate what's gone into it. guess: Kris Troutman ________ Ten-Chan Looks Like Joey Wheeler Comments: I was happy to hear "fanvagott". Not many songs seemed to use that sample. This is a cool little song, fun in its own way and pretty catchy. I love the ending. ________ Tertiary Jump Comments: Good use of the mellotron chord sample. I like the bassline that plays from 0:12 to 0:23. 1:12 and onwards is very good, good use of that weird sample. That was a difficult one to work with, and it's working well here. Cool overall sound use. guess: Blitz Lunar ________ The Incredible Cat Mincer Comments: Love the chords at the beginning (and throughout the song). Then the bass comes in, and wow, what a sound. Perhaps a bit on the loud side, but it sounds very powerful. I really really love the melody that starts at 0:46. Pretty much everything from 0:46 to 1:05 is world shaking stuff, at least to me. Some parts seem to have been recorded live, and sound slightly messy, which I think is a good thing. It gives this a really fun and perhaps more natural feel. I like how things go a bit crazy after the 2 minute mark. This is song is great fun to listen to. Funny ending. ________ Tidal Chamber Comments: Great sample use and sound design. Using the samples, this song creates a really strong atmosphere. Very well made. I found this very pleasant and relaxing to listen to. ________ Trop Glop Flop Comments: I like the sounds in this one. guess: Kris Troutman ________ TV Surfer Comments: Cool music. I like the TV sounds gimmick, but I feel that there are several sections where not much happens, and so perhaps it's a bit longer than it needs to be. I like the overall feel of the song, and the part at 0:45 is especially nice and atmospheric. guess: Kungfufurby ________ U.B. Funky Comments: Good percussive sounds. Good atmosphere. It kind of reminds me of music from one of those pirate/hacked SNES game intros. I like the melodic/harmonic thing at the end, although it plays a couple note that don't sound so good, and the sound used for it isn't very good. This is also very repetitive. Overall, I did enjoy it. guess: KungFuFurby ________ Untitled Comments: To begin with it's a bit long and doesn't progress quickly, but that works here since the first half seems to be a chillout song. 1:32 and onwards until 2:24 is my favorite part of this. Really cool use of the mellotron chords around the 2 minute mark. Up until 2:24, it's a great ambient/atmospheric song. Then things speed up a bit and it's not quite so relaxing anymore. It has a faster tempo, and honestly not very much seems to happen in this section of the song (although there is some cool sound design here). I was expecting it to turn into some crazy breakbeat stuff, but it just seemed to loop for a while and stop... I was a bit disappointed. Anyway, the good parts are great, and the not so good parts are still not bad. I enjoyed it overall. Fair composition, great sound engineering. ________ Way Out - No Way Comments: It seems like this has some tuning problems, especially noticable around 30 seconds. It's also a bit repetitive, and there isn't a great deal of variation throughout. Anyway, apart from that, I really like the feeling and atmosphere in this. It's very relaxing to listen to. And I did enjoy listening to this. guess: Kungfufurby ________ We Hate the 1998 Wave Comments: Nice sounds and atmosphere. Especially cool percussive sounds. I don't agree with the weird drum panning, though, it seems a bit strange. The part that starts at 0:26 is pretty cool. 1:57 is cool, although that siren-like noise could probably be a bit quieter. I like that triplet note arppegio thing at 2:37. The song fades out quite suddenly. It sounds like it would work perfectly in a video game as boss music. I liked it. guess: KungFuFurby ________ Welcome to SPC 6 Comments: Nice atmosphere and all, and pretty cool sound engineering. There are also some interesting composition elements in this. PENIS PENIS PENIS PENIS PENIS PENIS. I can appreciate this. The ending is pretty cool. 1:22 is an especially interesting part of the song. guess: KungFuFurby ________ WHAT THE @#$%!! Comments: This is quite cool. It has a really cool 'scared' feel to begin with. The first crash cymbal made me laugh for some reason. That'd work well in a video game. It's an interesting piece of music. I can hear a reference to Ganon's theme in this. The part at 1:19 is really really impressive. I was amazed at the harpsichord sounding thing - good composition (sounded very classical) and excellent sound engineering. The tempo changes there are cool too. It's just a shame that part was so short. It would have been cool to make it perhaps 20 seconds longer, just to show off that harpsichord sound. guess: KungFuFurby ________ Whippin' Good Comments: UGH AAAA UGH AAAH. I love the "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" at 1:02. This is your most interesting song in this compo in terms of composition. The sounds are certainly not bad either. I love the melody/harmony from 1:16 to 1:36. This is what it means to PENIS up to the maximum. Amazing use of the dominatrix sample. This song has something of a proper ending too, compared with your other songs which just seem to fade out abruptly. Even the title is good. I like this a lot, great work. guess: KungFuFurby ________ WorldJ Comments: I made this with my dad's MIDI keyboard. ________ Zen You Reach Ze State of Completeness Comments: Nice and relaxing feel/atmosphere. I like when the drums come in at 1:25. However, the quality of some of the sounds is quite poor. They sound poorly looped, and there's a great deal of annoying clicking/popping. It's not good. It's so bad that I'm going to give this a rock bottom score. It's such a shame, because I really liked the feel of this, but anyway. If it weren't for the sound problems, I'd probably give it a 70 or around that amount. I hope you enjoy your 40. Hahahahaahahhhahahh. PENIS FOREVER!!! !!! !!! guess: KungFuFurby ________
